Dana White sätter Tom Aspinall som ersättare till Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic

Tom Aspinall besegrade Curtis Blaydes under UFC 304 för att behålla interim-bältet i UFC:s tungviktsdivision. Segern har enligt UFC-bossen Dana White kvalificerat engelsmannen som ersättare till den planerade titelmatchen i viktklassen mellan mästaren Jon Jones och Stipe Miocic.

Aspinall redo att hoppa in vid behov till Jones vs. Miocic

Co-main matchen under helgens gala UFC 304 såg två av organisationens tungviktare ta upp till kamp i oktogonen. Engelsmannen och interim-mästaren Tom ”Honey Badger” Aspinall (15-3) drabbade där samman med Curtis ”Razor” Blaydes (18-5, 1 NC) i en match som inte skulle vara särskilt länge. Blott en minut in i den förstaronden kunde Aspinall finna avslutet via TKO efter att han fått ner Blaydes på canvasen med en stygg vänsternäve.

En person som blev särskilt imponerad av 31-åringens prestation den natten var UFC:s VD Dana White. Han vill nu se att Aspinall står som ersättare inför titelkampen i tungvikt mellan mästaren Jon ”Bones” Jones (27-1, 1 NC) och den tidigare titelhållaren Stipe Miocic (20-4).

Måste vara Aspinall

Följande Tom Aspinalls vinst över Curtis Blaydes uttalade sig Dana White om kampen. Han berättar att engelsmannen kommer stå som ersättare utifall att antingen Jon Jones eller Stipe Miocic inte kommer kunna delta i titelkampen de två emellan.

I think that we’re going to have to see what happens with this fight with Stipe, see where Jon’s head is or if Stipe wins see where his head is, and let’s see what they want to do.

Is it their last fight? Are they going to retire? I think if Stipe wins he probably will, but I think if Jon Jones wins I just think that competitive spirit that he has and his desire to prove to the world that he’s the best, especially when people are saying he’s possibly the best ever, I think that’s the kind of shit that fires Jon Jones up.

En turnering i tungvikt

Även om Aspinall troligen skulle acceptera rollen som ersättare, har han sina egna planer för galan då titelkampen i tungvikt skall äga rum. Han vill se en typ av turnering om toppositionen i viktklassen. Sama gala som Jones och Stipe går sin match, föreslår Aspinall en kamp mellan han själv och den nummer 3 rankade ryssen Alexander ”Drago” Volkov (38-10). Detta skulle kunna hjälpa till med att utse vem som är den riktiga mästaren av divisionen, förklarar ”Honey Badger”.
