Dana White avfärdar Justin Gaethjes krav på titelmatch

UFC:s president Dana White vill inte höra något om ett ultimatum från lättviktsveteranen Justin Gaethje. Gaethje har tidigare sagt att han vill få en titelmatch i divisionen, annars går han i pension. Enligt White är det ”knasigt” från Gaethje att hota med pensionering.

Under helgens gala UFC 317 fick organisationen en ny lättviktsmästare. Den tidigare fjäderviktstitelhållaren Ilia ”El Matador” Topuria (17-0) besegrade veteranen Charles ”do Bronxs” Oliveira (35-11, 1 NC) via en imponerande knockout i den första ronden.

Med en ny kung på lättviktstronen, vill Justin ”The Highlight” Gaethje (26-5) stå först på tur att utmana Topuria om hans nyvunna bälte. Det är dock mer än ett UFC-guld som Gaethje söker. Han vill även att organisationen betalar den skuld han anser de har till honom med en titelmatch. Nyligen förklarade nummer 3-rankade ”The Highlight” situationen så som han ser den:

They owe me a championship fight. I’m 3-1 in my last four. They came to my house begging me to fight Max Holloway at UFC 300. I consider that an exhibition fight. I don’t mean that the loss is not on my record.

I mean it had nothing to do with rankings. In the time that I did that, Dustin Poirier, who I just beat, got a good win over Benoit Saint Denis and then fought for the belt. Since I’ve won vs. Fiziev, the champion has been saying he wants to fight me.

So they could have easily set that up, but they didn’t. Then he vacates, and then Oliveira is 2-2 in his last fights, already has a loss to Makhachev, and they bring a brand-new guy in, and I get fucked again. So I’m not going to fight any of these motherfuckers for fun unless they pay me so much more money.

Knasigt beteende

Under presskonferensen följande UFC 317 fick UFC-bossen Dana White frågan om det var aktuellt med en titelutmaning för Gaetjhe. Den nu 36-årige amerikanen har bland annat hotat med sin pensionering från sporten om hans önskan inte uppfylls. White är dock inte imponerad av det ultimatum som Gaethje lagt fram och beskriver det som ett ”knasigt” förslag.

Listen, everybody has their opinions. If you’re thinking about retiring, you know how I feel about that. You should probably retire. We love Justin Gaethje and Justin Gaethje did step up and he’s been an exciting, fun fighter to have here in the UFC, but to say, ‘Listen, unless you give me a title shot I’m retiring,’ that’s pretty wacky.
