Max Holloway känner ett tvång att vinna matchen mot Dustin Poirier

UFC-lättviktaren Max Holloway bär ett måste till seger på sina axlar inför mötet med Dustin Poirier under UFC 318. Matchen blir det tredje inbördes mötet de två emellan. Enligt Holloway kan han inte ha två trilogier i vilka han förlorat alla matcher.

Nästa helg kommer UFC 318 gå av stapeln i New Orleans, Louisiana. Staten är lättviktsveteranen Dustin ”The Diamond” Poiriers (30-9, 1 NC) hemstat och även den plats han valt att gå sin sista oktogonmatch. Under galan kommer Poirier möta Max ”Blessed” Holloway (26-8) i vad som kommer bli en sorti för ”The Diamond” i organisationen. Holloway har dock inga tankar på att låta Poirier lämna sporten med en seger. Tvärtom, känner sig den 33-årige Hawaiisonen att han måste vinna matchen.

I en intervju nyligen förklarar Max Holloway hur viktigt det är för honom att inte förlora hans uppkommande kamp med Dustin Poirier. Holloways resonemang är att han redan har 0-3 i matcher i en trilogi, nämligen med Alexander ”The Great” Volkanovski (27-4).

Hans match med Poirier under UFC 318 blir också ett tredje möte de två emellan, där ”The Diamond” vunnit de två första. Holloway säger att han således måste vinna matchen. ”The Blessed Express” säger även att han hoppas vinsten kommer via en knockout.

I’m 0-3 in one trilogy. I’m not trying to be 0-3 in two trilogies. That’s the main thing going through my mind. The BMF title is cool and everything, and making history is great. But the main history I ain’t trying to make is be a man who fought two different trilogies and went 0-3.

I’m focused on going out there and getting my hand raised. Shout out to DP, ‘The Diamond.’ He’s a beast, he’s an animal, he’s a legend. I know this is his last dance, but I’ve got to play the spoiler here. I need this one.

Let’s figure out this trilogy and hopefully get a KO in this one, with me being on the winning side. That would be cool. If I’ve got to be the bad guy, so be it. Business is business. I’ll be the bad guy for maybe the week, for 25 minutes, and after that it’s all said and done.

Utöver sin match med Poirier, har Holloway även tankar rörande UFC:s rankningssystem. Han irriteras över att han fortfarande står med i fjäderviktsdivisionens rankning, säger han. Detta trots att den tidigare mästaren i viktklassen och nu lättviktstitelhållaren Ilia ”El Matador” Topuria (17-0) tagits bort.

They left me at No. 1 contender. So I was like, what the hell is going on? At the end of the day, I don’t care. The rankings is cool, the rankings is fun, but how many times do we see where guys who rank at a certain position saying now I’m getting a title shot? It took me 12 fights to get an interim title fight at ‘45.
