Colby Covington ställer in siktet på Charles Oliveira

UFC-welterviktaren Colby Covington har en ny motståndare i siktet för sin nästa kamp i oktogonen. Han säger sig vilja möta den tidigare lättviktsmästaren Charles Oliveira. Det här skulle enligt Covington vara ett stormöte i UFC. Om en Oliveira-matchning inte är möjligt, kan Covington tänka sig en kamp med den topprankade lättviktaren Belal Muhammad.

Covington vill möta Oliveira

Colby ”Chaos” Covington (17-4) fortsätter att söka sig en motståndare för hans första kamp under 2024. Det nya målet för den 36-årige amerikanen är att försöka locka till sig en tidigare mästare i UFC, Charles ”do Bronx” Oliveira (34-10, 1 NC). Oliveira höll för ett tag sedan lättviktsbältet i organisationen.

Det sätter honom ett snäpp under Covington i viktklasser, något som ”Chaos” dock inte ser ett större problem med. Sin vana trogen har Covington tagit till lite mer hårda ord för att få liv i en konversation om en matchning de två emellan. Om det dock inte blir av, är Covington fortfarande även inställd på att möta Belal ”Remember The Name” Muhammad (23-3, 1 NC).

Söker stora matcher

I en intervju nyligen förklarar Colby Covington att han är intresserad av att gå stora matcher under hans resterande tid i UFC. Han ser Charles Oliveira som en utmärkt motståndare för just en sådan kamp. Bland annat skulle lättviktaren Oliveria inte ha några problem att gå upp till weltervikt tack vare hans naturliga storlek, förklarar Covington.

I want legacy fights; I think a guy like Charles Oliveira makes sense. I’m the king of fucking Brazil, everybody knows I run that fucking country; all the women love me, all the men in Brazil want to be like me so Charles Oliveira, if you really want to come up to welterweight, and you want big fights, let’s see if you are about it or if you’re just talk.

If you want to come up here and walk the walk, let’s see. He’s a bigger name than Garry that’s a former champion, someone who’s actually done something in this business, someone that’s actually relevant. Is he going to defend his country or is going to go into retirement knowing that Colby Covington is the owner of Brazil.

He’s a huge lightweight, it’s not healthy and it’s not sustainable to cut to 155; we’re probably exactly the same weight, so we’re very comparable in size but skill? No, that’s where we’re not comparable. I beat him everywhere. I’m a better jiu-jitsu artist than him, I’m a better striker, I’m just a better all-around Mixed Martial Artist.

Muhammad som alternativ

Om en match med Oliveira inte blir av, siktar Covington på att klättra i welterviktsrankningen i stället. Fört det här har han pekat ut den nummer 2-rankade Belal Muhammad osm det perfekta motståndet.

I would like Belal; he’s talked a lot of smack and I want that racist to catch a fade. He’s out there saying I only got my title shot because of white privilege but now he’s squatting on his ranking. He should have to come out and fight, and I think we should fight, that’s the fight that should be next, he doesn’t deserve to fight for the title.

‘Remember the Name’ would be an easy night at the office. It’s just an easy fight, he can’t strike with me, and I’ll show the world that he’s just one dimensional, he’s not going to out wrestle me, he won’t take me down one time; his takedowns are average at best and his striking is so bad. I think I KO the guy and I think it’s a pretty easy fight.
