Conor McGregors tränare: Mötet mot Dustin Poirier borde vara titelmatch

Mycket står på spel inför huvudmatchen vid UFC 257 mellan Conor McGregor och Dustin Poirier men den irländske superstjärnans huvudtränare anser att mer än så borde ligga på bordet.

Fattar inte varför matchen inte gäller en titel

I oktober meddelande den regerande UFC-lättviktsmästaren Khabib Nurmagomedov sin pensionering vilket vanligtvis leder till att titeln blir fråntagen och vakant. UFC:s VD Dana White har dock pausat den företeelsen i hopp om att övertala den obesegrade ryssen i januari att gå en sista match.

Med det sagt tror White att Nurmagomedov kommer återvända för att kunna förbättra sitt facit till 30-0 men det verkar osannolikt att han skulle fightas efter det.

I det scenariot skulle lättviktstiteln bli vakant ändå och McGregors huvudtränare John Kavanagh kan inte låta bli att undra varför inget bälte alls står på spel vid UFC 257. Han uttalade sig som följande i The Mac Life:

I don’t really get why this one isn’t for the title, if I’m being 100 percent honest. Maybe it’s Dana, this is a little carrot towards Khabib ‘do you really want this guy [to have it?].’ I don’t know. I know there’s stuff, the games that go on, I don’t involve myself in it.

But this to me feels like it’s for the belt. But I guess at the very least the winner of this will be offered a title fight but who would that be against? It’s a bit of a strange scene we have in front of us, which makes it interesting.

Kavanagh argumenterar väl för McGregor och Poiriers status i rankingen. Kanske skulle i alla fall en interimtitel vara aktuell för att hjälpa viktklassen att flytta framåt oavsett om Nurmagomedov väljer att fightas igen eller inte.

Idealscenariot skulle vara om McGregor lyckades avsluta Poirier i januari och sedan få en rematch mot ryssen vid någon tidpunkt under 2021. Nurmagomedov har dock nobbat tanken på en rematch när han diskuterat vilka potentiella fighter som kan intressera honom:

I think Conor and Khabib are the two best lightweights. It would be for me from a coaching perspective, phenomenal to see that contest again. Will he come back? You’re asking the wrong guy. That’s Khabib.

He seems the type of guy if he says something, that’s it, but like Dana has hinted, there might be some wiggle room in those promises made. Time will tell.

I nuläget har Kavanagh dock fullt fokus på att hjälpa McGregor att bli redo för matchen mot Poirier. Efter att endast fightats en gång under 2020 är irländaren återigen intresserad av att hålla sig aktiv nästa år  men innan detta måste han ta sig förbi Poirier i rematchen:

Right now, we have a very exciting fight coming up in a couple of weeks’ time. I think 2021, regardless of what’s next for Conor, is going to be an exciting year. He seems to be in a very different mindset than I’ve seen him in a long time.

Conor tends to be all in no matter what he’s doing and he’s all in on following a routine and training a certain way and eating a certain way and he’s got all sorts of ideas about different competitions and different things he can do for the next year and I’m just happy to be playing a small part.
