Brian Ortega planerar flytt till lättviktsdivisionen

UFC-fjäderviktaren Brian Ortega säger sig planera att flytta upp en viktklass till lättvikt. Detta efter att hans nuvarande division har låst sig lite i toppen, förklarar han. Ortega berättar även att han möjligen kan ha en lättviktskamp till UFC 306, en gala som äger rum i september månad.

Ortega redo för lättviktskamper

Brian ”T-City” Ortega (16-3, 1 NC) säger sig vara redo att ta ett kliv uppåt i viktklasser. Den 33-årige amerikanen har spenderat en längre tid som fjäderviktare i UFC, där han bland annat gått kamp om titeln mot dåvarande mästaren Max ”Blessed” Holloway (26-7). Närmast är Ortega planerad att möta Diego Lopes (24-6) under UFC 303 nu den kommande helgen. Den kampen kan dock komma bli den sista i fjädervikt för ”T-City”.

“Låst” i fjäderviktsdivisionen

I en intervju nyligen diskuterade Brian Ortega sin situation i fjäderviktsdivisionen. I dagsläget befinner han sig på en plats nummer 3 i rankningen, men har ändå inlett samtal med UFC om en flytt uppåt i viktklasser. Han säger att han möjligen kan komma genomföra sin lättviktsdebut under UFC 306 i september månad.

We talked about fighting Sept. 14 at Sphere. That’s the only conversation I had with them that made sense. I said yes to it. They said yes to it. We all got excited and that was kind of in the world. They told me my weight class had no one that they wanted me to fight. They didn’t really want me to fight contenders and stuff, so I decided to move to 155. We had a name, but I can’t say it. It might still happen. And I hope it does.

Anledningen till att Ortega vill gå upp till lättvikt är att han inte ser en direkt väg till titeln som fjäderviktare. Han förutspår att både Max Holloway och den tidigare mästaren Alexander ”The Great” Volkanovski (26-4) båda har förtur på en bälteskamp.

There’s no title fight for me anytime soon because of what’s going on in the game. Max has a guaranteed title shot and Volkanovski does, as well. So even when Topuria does fight, he fights Max. If Max wins, it’s Max vs. Volk 4, which is going to take up to next year. If Topuria wins, then it’s Topuria vs. Volk 2. Then I still have to wait until next year. So when I say the title fight’s not coming anytime soon, it’s just not because of the favors that both of them have done, the leaps and the risks that they both have taken.

Ortega fortsätter med att beskriva hur han söker sig en titel. Således kommer han att ta ett kliv uppåt i viktklasser för att fortsätta jakten där, samtidigt som han säger sig vilja ha kul med sin karriär i oktogonen.

Volk fought on two weeks’ notice against Islam Makhachev, and Max against Justin Gaethje, although it was a full camp, he fought for the BMF belt. Both of them, it’s just a lot. Everyone has done a lot. So for me to say that I’m there and deserve it right now, it’s not true. Selfishly, of course, since I was a kid I’ve been chasing to be a champion. But you have to make peace with reality, and that’s the reality of this game right now. That’s where it’s at, that’s where it’s going, so why not just have fun with my career?
