MMA-domaren Marc Goddard vill inte döma Leon Edwards UFC-matcher

Den engelske MMA-domaren Marc Goddard talade nyligen om varför han undviker att döma vissa matcher. Enligt Goddard är han inte intresserad i att stå i buren tillsammans med atleter som han har ett speciellt band med. Han tar som exempel upp den regerande welterviktsmästaren i UFC, Leon Edwards.

Goddard och Edwards har en koppling

Marc Goddard står idag med en mycket hög respekt som domare inom MMA. Engelsmannen har dömt flertalet högt profilerade kamper i många organisationer, vilket bland annat inkluderar UFC och Bellator.

Han var även själv tidigare tävlande inom sporten, då inom tungvikt. Det finns dock vissa fighters vilka troligen aldrig kommer få stå i buren med Goddard som domare. Han har nu öppnat upp om anledningarna till att han undviker att döma vissa matcher.

Edwards första tränare

I en intervju nyligen förklarar Marc Goddard att han inte kan tänka sig döma en kamp med UFC:s regerande welterviktsmästare Leon ”Rocky” Edwards (22-3, 1 NC). Enligt Goddard, är anledningen att han har ett speciellt band med Edwards. Han var nämligen ”Rocky”s första tränare i MMA.

People don’t know this, there are certain fights. Here’s a classic case, Leon Edwards, you’ve never seen me referee Leon Edwards in the UFC and you never will. Why? Because I was Leon Edwards’ first MMA coach.

That was way, way back when he was an amateur but it’s a common-sense element for me, even though the link is so dated, who knew then when Leon first walked in. But you’ve never saw me referee him and you never will because we just keep it out of the way.

Undvek Adesanya vs. Pereira 2

Goddard fortsätter och säger att han tackade nej till erbjudandet att stå som domare i den andra kampen mellan Israel ”The Last Stylebender” Adesanya (24-3) och Alex ”Poatan” Pereira (11-2). Anledningen denna gången var att Goddard inte ville att Adesanya skulle känna av någon negativitet, då Goddard var domaren i den första kampen som ”The Last Stylebender” förlorade via TKO.

Do you remember when Israel Adesanya fought Alex Pereira for the second time in Miami? I specifically requested not to do that fight too. Me and him are fine, I’ve refereed him since, I’ve refereed his fight with Sean Strickland.

But I actually removed myself because what I didn’t want to do was walk in the dressing room, I was thinking of the fighter then, this is his night, it’s all about him. I didn’t want to walk into that dressing room and him to have any form of negative connotations or something like that.

So, I just thought that the right thing to do and the fairest thing to do by him is just stay out of the fight and give it to another ref. There’s been a couple of incidences where there’s been certain fighters that I would rather not officiate for personal reasons. We never want to be the story; I never want to be the story. My utopia in a fight is to say nothing but we don’t decide that the fighters do. It’s their sport. That comes with experience, it’s not about me.
