Dana White: Colby Covington kommer möta Leon Edwards

UFC:s president Dana White har gjort det klart att nästa utmanare till Leon Edwards welterviktsbälte kommer bli Colby Covington. Detta trots att Edwards själv inte har något intresse i att låta Covington tävla om titeln.

Som fighter och t.o.m. mästare i UFC, är det fortfarande organisationen som i slutändan avgör vem som blir din motståndare. Vissa kan möjligen influera ens matchningar mer än andra, dock är normen den att Ultimate Fighting Championship och dess president Dana White blir den slutgiltiga beslutsfattaren.

Det här är det rådande scenariot som den regerande welterviktsmästaren Leon ”Rocky” Edwards (21-3, 1 NC) står inför. Efter att ha besegrat den tidigare titelhållaren i divisionen Kamaru ”The Nigerian Nightmare” Usman (20-3) för andra gången på raken förrförra veckan, har det redan börjats spekulera kring nästa motståndare till Edwards bälte.

Det namn som tycks stå högst på listan hos UFC är den tidigare interim-mästaren i weltervikt och flerfaldiga titelutmanaren Colby ”Chaos” Covington (17-3). Det här är dock inget som skulle intressera Edwards, förklarar han. Den 31-årige engelsmannen vill se Covington ”förtjäna” sin chans på bältet genom att gå ett par matcher i divisionens toppskikt först.

I definitely have a say. Listen, he ain’t getting a title shot next, right. Look at the road I had to take to get there. There’s no way you’re getting beat twice by the guy that I just beat twice, went out and beat Jorge Masvidal, and then sit out for a year and a half.

Not even tweeting or nothing, just go missing for a year and then randomly pops up at the weigh-ins and it’s like, ‘OK, he’s fighting for the title next.’ It makes no sense at all. So, let’s see how it plays out, he has to go out there and earn his way like I had to do.

Edwards protester och synpunkter tycks dock inte haft någon inverkan på UFC och Dana Whites beslutsamhet. White förklarar att han vill se ”Chaos” stå i buren mot Edwards härnäst. Han säger sig dock förstå att mästarens vilja att undvika ytterligare en brottare. Särskilt efter att Edwards mött och besegrat Usman två gånger om.

Listen, it’s not like I’m a big, ‘Oh Colby.’ – Colby Covington deserves this shot at the title. I don’t blame Leon. Leon just got through Usman twice and now he’s looking at another wrestler now with a funky style that’s tough to deal with. When you become the champ, everybody’s coming after you.

All the straight killers are coming after you for the next three times a fucking year, you’re faced with nothing but the baddest dudes in the world in your division. If you look at Usman and what he did – Usman ran through that division twice. Usman’s one of the greatest of all time. Leon just beat him twice. You’re the man, Leon.

För White är det dock Covington som kommer bli näst på tur att gå en kamp om welterviktsbältet.

You’re the guy. And everyone’s coming after you, and it’s going to be Colby next.
