Ian Machado Garry vill ta sig an Michael Page

Den irländske UFC-welterviktaren Ian Machado Garry vill möta engelsmannen Michael Page i oktogonen. Enligt Garry, har han inga alternativ på matchningar i den övre delen av rankningen. Således har han tackat ja till en matchning med Page, säger han.

Ian “The Future” Machado Garry (14-0) har hunnit med att gå en match under det här året. I februari mötte han Geoff ”Handz of Steel” Neal (16-5) i en kamp som slutade i seger via delat beslut för Garry. Därefter har han ivrigt försökt jaga ifatt en match med den flerfaldige titelutmanaren i UFC:s welterviktsdivision, Colby ”Chaos” Covington (17-4).

Trots tappra försök har detta inte lett till några resultat för den 26-årige irländaren. Således har Garry nu fått börja leta efter en annan potentiell motståndare. Valet tycks ha fallit på den relativa nykomlingen i UFC och Bellator-legendaren Michael ”MVP” Page (22-2).

Inga topprankade motståndare

I en intervju nyligen beklagar sig Ian Machado Garry över bristen på topprankat motstånd i dagsläget. Alla de fighters som skulle vara lämpliga är antingen skadade eller har redan en offentliggjord match framför sig, säger han.

I’m sick of this ranking stuff. I’m in a position where everyone above me is injured and then Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad are facing off against each other. I have no interest in fighting anyone below me but I’m kind of in a position where I have no choice other than to wait, and the last thing I want to do is wait. Anyone that is willing to stand across the Octagon from me on June 29th can get their ass whooped.

Enbart lägre motstånd

Därmed har Garry beslutat sig för att ta sig an en lägre rankad motståndare. Detta då han inte vill sitta och vänta på att en topprankad kamp blir tillgänglig. Han säger sig ha accepterat en match med Michael Page. I dagsläget väntar han på att få höra tillbaka från MVP:s läger.

I can only fight down in the rankings, and this is where I’ve got to show that I will fight anyone. I’ve said yes to a fight with MVP. I’ve said yes to that name, him and his coaches are deciding because he seems a bit heavy to make weight in seven weeks’ time, but I’ve said yes.

Ingen co-main

En av förhoppningarna som Garry hade med en kamp mot Colby Covington, är att den matchen skulle ägt rum som co-main under en numrerad gala. Detta är dock inte längre aktuellt, tror ”the Future”, då ett lägre rankat motstånd är vad som väntar honom i hans nästa kamp.

The truth is, if it’s not Colby firstly then I don’t believe it’s going to be co-main. I don’t believe they’ll give the co-main if it’s not the Colby Covington fight. That was the fight I wanted, the fight that sells and drives that anticipation.

To fight and compete on the same night as Conor McGregor, watch him go out and do his thing, hear his walkout, sit side by side with him at the press conference, and just be grateful to be in the presence of the greatest to ever do it in the UFC. It would be a feather in the cap for sure.
